We prioritize stories that have the potential to bring about change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In our first four years of operation, we have reported on topics ranging from Medicaid work requirements to public corruption scandals to the experience of young people in the Arkansas juvenile justice system. We've covered the COVID-19 pandemic in prisons, workplaces and hospitals.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"\">We've partnered with other news organizations large and small, from national outlets such as ProPublica to public radio and newspapers here in Arkansas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Because ANNN does not rely on advertising revenue and does not have a full-time staff, we are not bound by a regular publication cycle. Today, the work rule is gone, but the story of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2021\/03\/05\/inside-arhome-the-states-new-vision-for-medicaid-expansion\/\"><span style=\"\">the state\u2019s unusual approach to Medicaid expansion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> continues to develop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Arkansas, unlike most Southern states, expanded its Medicaid program to cover low-income adults almost a decade ago, as envisioned by the Affordable Care Act. As of early 2021, more than 300,000 Arkansans were insured through the program, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/04\/21\/the-economic-fallout-of-covid-19-a-rural-hospital-in-mountain-home-struggles-to-survive\/\"><span style=\"\">with consequences for rural hospitals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> and other components of the health care system. With support from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economichardship.org\/2020\/05\/arkansas-poultry-workers-amid-the-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"\">the Economic Hardship Reporting Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">, ANNN covered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/05\/11\/were-not-essential-were-expendable\/\"><span style=\"\">the unfolding crisis inside the state\u2019s poultry plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">, a major driver of infections and deaths within the Latino and Marshallese communities in Arkansas. ANNN also told the story of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2021\/01\/29\/its-dog-food-compared-to-human-life-inside-a-small-town-manufacturer-struggling-with-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"\">workers at a pet food manufacturer in Southeast Arkansas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> struggling to contain the spread of the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In late 2020, as hospitalizations soared, we interviewed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/11\/25\/as-covid-hospitalizations-top-1k-doctors-and-nurses-say-health-care-system-is-stretched-to-its-limits\/\"><span style=\"\">nurses and doctors on the front lines of the fight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> and reported on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/12\/23\/arkansass-icu-beds-run-low-as-covid-19-cases-surge\/\"><span style=\"\">ICUs flooded with COVID patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">. ANNN followed the stories of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/05\/13\/renters-face-eviction-threats-during-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"\">people<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/05\/20\/no-shelter-in-place-conway-renter-says-landlord-tried-to-illegally-force-him-out-of-his-home\/\"><span style=\"\">evicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> during the pandemic, and we investigated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2020\/10\/23\/thousands-of-unemployment-claims-remain-locked-by-the-state\/\"><span style=\"\">chronic problems with the state\u2019s pandemic unemployment assistance program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">. We are especially interested in the intersection of criminal justice and economic inequality. During the 2017 and 2019 legislative sessions, we covered proposals affecting education, health care, taxation, housing and other areas of public policy. ANNN has also reported extensively on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/category\/public-corruption\/\"><span style=\"\">the sprawling public corruption scandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> that ensnared multiple Arkansas legislators, a major health care provider and many others in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22778\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22778\" src=\"http:\/\/arknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dermottcorrectional-1170x658.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dermottcorrectional-1170x658.jpeg 1170w, https:\/\/arknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dermottcorrectional-700x394.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/arknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dermottcorrectional-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/arknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dermottcorrectional.jpeg 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A former Arkansas Division of Youth Services treatment center in 2017 (Credit: Brian Chilson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Juvenile justice and child welfare<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2017 and 2018, ANNN investigated Arkansas\u2019s troubled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/category\/juvenile-justice\/\"><span style=\"\">juvenile justice system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2017\/05\/26\/abuse-again-at-arkansas-juvenile-lockup\/\"><span style=\"\">allegations of abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2017\/08\/31\/kids-in-isolation-locked-away-in-dermott\/\"><span style=\"\">the use of isolation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> at the state\u2019s \u201ctreatment centers\u201d for youth. The project followed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2017\/08\/02\/no-end-in-sight-of-state-control-of-youth-lockups\/\"><span style=\"\">the state\u2019s takeover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> of the treatment centers from private operators and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2018\/01\/01\/lock-up-last\/\"><span style=\"\">efforts to reform the juvenile justice system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> to make it less reliant on locking up young people. ANNN has also reported on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/2019\/02\/22\/young-adults-aging-out-of-arkansas-foster-care-system-struggle-to-adapt\/\"><span style=\"\">foster care in Arkansas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> and other components of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arknews.org\/index.php\/category\/child-welfare\/\"><span style=\"\">the child welfare system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Impact is the Arkansas Nonprofit News Network\u2019s primary measure of success.
